CAF Slams Sanctions on Morocco, Senegal After Chaotic AFCON 2025 Final

CAIRO – The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has handed down severe sanctions following the chaotic Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 final, including a match ban for Moroccan star Achraf Hakimi and massive fines for both finalists, Senegal and Morocco.

In a ruling by the CAF Disciplinary Board on Wednesday, Achraf Hakimi was suspended for two official CAF matches, with one match suspended for a year, for “unsporting behaviour” during the final. This marks a significant blow for the Paris Saint-Germain defender.

The football governing body also imposed substantial financial penalties on the national federations. The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) was fined a total of $315,000 for various infractions, including improper conduct by players who invaded the VAR review area and the use of lasers by supporters.

The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) received even heavier fines, totaling $600,000, for the unsporting conduct of its players and technical staff, as well as the improper behavior of its supporters, which CAF stated “brought the game into disrepute.”

CAF also formally rejected a protest lodged by Morocco against Senegal, ruling the claims of regulatory violations during the final as unfounded. The sanctions conclude the disciplinary proceedings from a final marred by controversy, player walk-offs, and poor fan behavior.
