Abia State Government Unveils Free Mass Transit Routes for New Electric Buses

The Abia State Government has officially announced the designated routes for its newly launched fleet of free Mass Transit Electric Buses, a landmark initiative aimed at alleviating transportation burdens for residents.

The announcement details the specific corridors within Umuahia, the state capital, and Aba, the commercial hub, where commuters can access the zero-emission buses at no cost.

This initiative is a key part of Governor Alex Otti’s administration’s commitment to sustainable urban development, reducing the high cost of transportation, and promoting a cleaner environment.

Key Routes and Operational Details

While the full list of all routes and schedules is expected to be released by the State Ministry of Transport, the service is set to connect major economic and residential zones.

The free electric bus service is anticipated to cover essential routes linking:

· Key government secretariats and ministries in Umuahia.
· Major markets and commercial districts in Aba, such as Ariaria International Market.
· Central motor parks and residential estates in both cities.

The government has urged residents to take advantage of the service, which aims to reduce reliance on expensive commercial vehicles and tricycles (Keke NAPEP), thereby putting more disposable income back into households.

The launch of the electric bus fleet marks a significant step in modernizing public transport in South-East Nigeria and positions Abia as a pioneer in adopting sustainable mobility solutions.
