Activist Alleges Plot to Arrest Atiku, Amaechi, Others, Warns of “One-Party System”

Activist and public affairs analyst Adekunle Adebayo has issued a stark warning, alleging a high-level plot to arrest and intimidate major opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi.

In a statement on Tuesday, Adebayo claimed the alleged move is part of a wider strategy to weaken opposition politics and entrench what he described as a de facto one-party system in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 elections.

He named former Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai, ex-Minister Isa Ali Pantami, and former Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola as others reportedly targeted for arrest.

Citing a Pattern of Arrests

Adebayo linked the alleged plot to the recent arrests of former Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal, former Anambra Governor Chris Ngige, and ex-Attorney General Abubakar Malami, suggesting a pattern of politically motivated actions.

He argued that such selective law enforcement based on political affiliation violates the Nigerian Constitution, threatening personal liberty, freedom of association, and the independence of the judiciary.

“Selective application of law enforcement based on political affiliation is incompatible with constitutional democracy,” Adebayo stated.

The activist urged civil society, the international community, and all Nigerians to closely monitor the situation, cautioning that the country risks a democratic backslide where institutions exist in form only, while power is consolidated through coercion.

There has been no immediate official response from security agencies or the presidency regarding these allegations.
