A married woman who allegedly staged her own kidnap to extort money from her family has been found in a hotel in Delta State, where she was holed up with her lover.
The suspect, 32-year-old Nkechi Eze, was declared missing two weeks ago after her husband received a ransom demand of ₦2 million following claims that she had been kidnapped by gunmen along the Asaba-Benin Expressway.
However, police operatives tracking the case traced phone signals to a hotel in Oghara, where Eze was found on Monday in the company of her boyfriend, one Kingsley Okoro.
“She was not kidnapped. She conspired with her lover to deceive her husband and family into paying a ransom they intended to share,” Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, told CDA News Nigeria.
The husband had already paid ₦1.2 million before the hoax was uncovered. The suspects have reportedly confessed to the crime.
Both Eze and Okoro are in police custody and will be charged with conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretenses. Police also recovered part of the ransom from the hotel room.
