The Nigerian government has expressed deep displeasure with South Africa over the continued xenophobic attacks on Nigerian citizens and the perceived diplomatic coldness from Pretoria, according to Ambassador Ojukwu, a senior official in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, Ojukwu declared plainly: “Nigeria is not happy with South Africa.”
His comments come amid rising tensions following fresh waves of attacks on foreign nationals in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, in which several Nigerian-owned businesses were looted and properties destroyed.
“We have registered our protests formally and informally. The South African government has made promises repeatedly, but the attacks keep happening. This is unacceptable,” Ojukwu said.
He also hinted that the Federal Government is considering further measures, including a possible diplomatic review, if South Africa fails to protect Nigerians and their investments.
The Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria has been evacuated of non-essential staff, and evacuation flights for citizens willing to return have been scheduled.
South African authorities have yet to issue an official response to Ojukwu’s remarks.
