The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Mr. Mohammed Kasim of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the Gwagwalada Area Council chairmanship election in the Federal Capital Territory.
The Returning Officer, Prof. Philip Akpeni, announced the result on Sunday, stating that Kasim polled 22,165 votes to secure victory in the February 21, 2026 poll.
“I am the returning officer for the 2026 FCT Area Council, Gwagwalada chairmanship held on Feb. 21, 2026. That Mohammed Kasim of PDP, having certified the requirements of the law is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected,” Akpeni said.
Results Breakdown
The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Usman Yahaya, scored a total of 17,788 votes to finish second, while Mr. Biko Umar of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) polled 1,687 votes to secure third place.
The chairmanship election was conducted across all ten wards of the council, including Paiko, Dobi, Gwako, Ibwa, Staff Quarters, Zuba, Ikwa, Kutunku, Gwagwalada Centre, and Tunga Maje.
Kasim’s victory marks a significant win for the PDP in the FCT Area Council elections, breaking the APC’s dominance following earlier wins in AMAC and Bwari.
