ABUJA, NIGERIA — The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised alarm over the recent detention of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, describing it as a worrying signal of authoritarian tendencies in the country.
In a statement released on Thursday, the party urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene and ensure adherence to the rule of law, stressing that the handling of the El-Rufai case undermines democratic norms and threatens citizens’ rights.
According to ADC officials, the detention appears politically motivated and reflects a drift toward centralization of power at the expense of due process and institutional independence. The party called for immediate judicial transparency, fair treatment, and the safeguarding of fundamental freedoms for all Nigerians.
“Democracy thrives on accountability and respect for the rule of law. Any actions that compromise these principles set dangerous precedents for governance in Nigeria,” the statement read.
Political analysts note that ADC’s intervention signals rising tensions between opposition parties and the ruling government ahead of the 2027 elections, highlighting concerns about political freedoms, electoral integrity, and checks on executive power.
The party concluded by urging all stakeholders—government, opposition, and civil society—to uphold democratic practices and ensure Nigeria does not drift toward authoritarianism.
