Adesanya-Davies Calls for Gumi’s Arrest Over “Treasonous” Remarks on US-Nigeria Military Cooperation

Professor Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies, a prominent public affairs analyst and former presidential candidate, has called on the Federal Government to arrest and interrogate Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi over recent comments she described as “treasonous” and harmful to national security.

In a press release issued on Friday, Adesanya-Davies strongly condemned Gumi’s public statement urging President Bola Tinubu to halt military cooperation with the United States following reported airstrikes against terrorists in Nigeria.

She accused Gumi of “strategic communication on behalf of terror elements,” saying his remarks embolden terrorists and sabotage Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts at a time of severe insecurity.

“When a cleric consistently discourages strong counter-terrorism measures, delegitimizes allies fighting terror, and warns that terrorists may retaliate if pressured, the question must be asked plainly: whose interest is being served? Certainly not Nigeria’s,” Adesanya-Davies stated.

She called on the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, and the Office of the National Security Adviser to immediately arrest Gumi and investigate his communications, associations, and funding.

Adesanya-Davies also dismissed Gumi’s framing of counter-terrorism as a religious issue, insisting terrorism is a criminal threat to all Nigerians regardless of faith.

She reaffirmed support for international cooperation in the fight against terrorism and urged President Tinubu to ignore what she termed “intimidation masked as religious advice.”
