The Airport Police Command in Lagos has arrested a 24-year-old man for his alleged involvement in a romance fraud syndicate that defrauded victims of approximately N48.5 million.
According to the command’s spokesperson, ASP Mohammed Adeola, the suspect was apprehended on Monday by operatives of the Anti-Fraud Unit while attempting to board a flight to Asaba, following credible intelligence.
Preliminary investigations reveal that the suspect, who joined the syndicate in 2023, used fabricated profiles on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. He allegedly operated under the alias “Travis Kevin,” posing as a white American medical doctor, and used a fake online banking platform to display false balances to deceive victims.
The police stated that the suspect would request money from victims under the pretext of needing urgent funds for feeding and medical supplies after claiming to have sustained injuries, with promises of repayment. Funds were reportedly transferred through cryptocurrency channels.
The Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, Mrs. Olufunke Ogunbode, has ordered a comprehensive investigation and directed operatives to track down other syndicate members. The suspect will be handed over to Interpol for further investigation and prosecution.
