The All Progressives Congress (APC) has produced 25 governorship candidates across Nigeria following Thursday’s governorship primaries, even as the exercises in Kwara and Bauchi states suffered significant delays and were rescheduled amid rising political tensions and failed consensus arrangements.
While incumbent governors and consensus-backed candidates coasted to victory in 25 states including Ogun, Kebbi, Katsina, Kaduna, Delta, Enugu, and Rivers, the exercises in Kwara, Bauchi, and Zamfara — where State House of Assembly polls for Maradun I and II were also affected — were thrown into uncertainty after the APC National Working Committee postponed the contests. In Kwara State, the Chairman of the APC governorship primaries committee, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, attributed the delay to logistical issues, stating: “We came in late and we needed to be fair to all and to be able to have an effective management of the election, we needed a full day to do that.” He confirmed that 10 governorship aspirants attended a strategic closed-door meeting on Thursday evening ahead of the rescheduled Friday exercise.
The postponements in Kwara and Bauchi immediately fuelled suspicions within party ranks, with supporters openly accusing influential figures of attempting to manipulate the process in favour of preferred candidates, despite the official logistical explanation.
The APC National Working Committee confirmed that the rescheduling was approved “following consultations with relevant stakeholders and in furtherance of the party’s commitment to ensuring a transparent, orderly, peaceful, and credible primary election process,” with Bauchi and Kwara primaries moved to Friday, May 22, and Zamfara Assembly polls shifted to Sunday, May 24, 2026.
With the rescheduled primaries now underway, the APC is expected to complete its full lineup of 2027 governorship candidates across all 36 states by the weekend.
