ABA, NIGERIA — The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has called on Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe and House of Representatives member Alex Mascot Ikwechegh to vacate their seats in the National Assembly following their defection to other political parties.
Speaking at a press briefing in Aba, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Chukwuemeka Nwokoro, insisted that both lawmakers were elected on the APGA platform and should therefore relinquish their mandates after moving to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Labour Party (LP), respectively.
“The seats they are occupying at the National Assembly belong to APGA. It is only honourable that they vacate them immediately,” Nwokoro stated.
Senator Abaribe, who represents Abia South Senatorial District, has reportedly joined the ADC, while Rep. Ikwechegh, representing Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency, formally defected to the Labour Party last week after meeting with Governor Alex Otti.
Nwokoro described their departure as a “prayer answered” for the party, claiming it had liberated APGA from what he termed “political hostage and asphyxiation”.
He accused the two lawmakers of contributing little to the party’s growth in Abia State during their tenure.
While acknowledging that political defections are common in Nigeria’s democracy, APGA assured its members that the exits would not weaken the party’s structure in the state.
The party, under Chairman Sunday Onukwubiri, has begun repositioning ahead of the 2027 general elections and warned it would no longer serve as a “last resort” for opportunistic politicians.
