Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has raised a fresh alarm, accusing President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, of orchestrating a grand plot to undermine and destroy Nigeria’s democracy.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Saturday, Atiku alleged that the duo is systematically eroding institutional independence, muzzling opposition voices, and deploying state security apparatuses to intimidate political rivals ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“What we are witnessing is a coordinated assault on our democratic foundation,” Atiku declared. “Tinubu and Wike are working together to turn Nigeria into a one-party state. They want to silence every opposition and destroy the very essence of our constitutional democracy.”
The ADC flag-bearer specifically pointed to recent police brutality against protesters in Abuja and the alleged harassment of opposition leaders as evidence of the alleged plot. He called on civil society organizations, the international community, and well-meaning Nigerians to rise in defence of democracy.
“We will not sit back and watch a few individuals burn the house we all built,” he added.
Neither the Presidency nor the FCT Minister has issued an official response to Atiku’s allegations at the time of filing this report. However, political analysts view the outburst as a sign of intensifying political tensions ahead of 2027.
Atiku urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and resist any attempt to truncate the nation’s democratic journey.
