Atuma Says He Joined Politics to Serve, Not Enrich Himself

UMUAHIA, Abia State — The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Abia Central Senatorial District in the 2027 general elections, Rt. Hon. Emeka Atuma, has said his decision to enter politics was motivated by a desire to serve humanity rather than accumulate personal wealth.

Atuma made the statement on Tuesday during a special radio interview in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, where he discussed his political journey, previous legislative experience and vision for effective representation.

The former member of the House of Representatives, who represented Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency from 2003 to 2007, maintained that he was already financially established before venturing into partisan politics.

“Before arriving in public service, before joining partisan politics, I was already an established man. So I didn’t join politics to enrich myself. I didn’t join politics for what I would get. Rather, I came for what I would give,” Atuma stated.

CDA News Nigeria verified the remarks made in a radio interview.

He explained that his political philosophy centres on human capital development, infrastructure provision and improving the living conditions of the people he represents.

According to him, political representation is a responsibility founded on public trust, which elected officials must justify by delivering projects, opportunities and programmes that respond to the needs of their constituents.

“Representation is based on trust. If they’ve been able to trust you to represent them, you should be able to bring things that will meet their needs,” he said.

Reflecting on his tenure in the National Assembly, Atuma said he sought to show that purposeful leadership could make a lasting difference in constituents’ lives through infrastructure development and engagement with the Federal Government.

He highlighted employment opportunities facilitated for young graduates in the Federal Civil Service, claiming that some beneficiaries recruited approximately two decades ago had progressed to senior positions, including assistant director and deputy director.

Atuma described their career progression as an indication of the long-term value of investing in human capital. He also said some beneficiaries had returned to support his current senatorial ambition.

“Those that joined the Federal Civil Service through me 20 years ago, some of them are deputy directors, assistant directors,” he said.

The APC candidate also cited road construction and school infrastructure among the projects he said were facilitated during his previous legislative tenure.

He stressed that public projects should meet acceptable standards of quality and durability, criticising the alleged practice of public officials benefiting personally from contracts meant to serve their constituencies.

Atuma maintained that infrastructure delivery and sustainable human capital development remain central to his political philosophy.

His comments come as political activities and consultations continue across Abia Central Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections.

As the campaign period approaches, his record in office, the projects attributed to his representation and his proposed agenda for the district are likely to feature prominently in discussions about his senatorial ambition.

CDA News Nigeria will continue to report on political developments, candidates’ statements and issues affecting Abia Central Senatorial District.
