Bayelsa Holds Tribute Day, Sporting Events for Late Deputy Governor Ewhrudjakpo

YENAGOA – The Bayelsa State Government is holding a series of events to honour the memory of its late Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who passed away on December 11, 2025, at the age of 60.

As part of a four-day funeral program, a Day of Tribute is scheduled for Wednesday at the Chief DSP Alamieyeseigha Memorial Banquet Hall in the state capital. This follows sporting activities held on Tuesday at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex, which featured a novelty football match, athletics, traditional wrestling, and a tug-of-war competition among civil servants.

The sporting events were organized to recognize Ewhrudjakpo’s significant contributions to sports development in the state. As the supervising commissioner for the Ministry of Sports until his demise, his legacy in the sector was celebrated by government officials and residents alike.

Governor Douye Diri, accompanied by his wife, Justice Patience Diri, performed the ceremonial kick-off for the novelty match, which ended in a goalless draw between Bayelsa Queens and a Bayelsa State All-Stars team. The event was attended by National Assembly members, state legislators, and other top dignitaries.

Professor Nimibofa Ayawei, Chairman of the Funeral Committee and Secretary to the State Government, stated that the activities were a fitting tribute to the late deputy governor’s service and dedication to the growth of sports in Bayelsa.
