The United Kingdom has officially designated Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation, marking a significant escalation in its response to security threats linked to the Iranian military body.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the decision makes it a criminal offence in the UK to belong to, support, or promote the IRGC. The designation also grants authorities broader powers to investigate and disrupt activities associated with the group.
According to British officials, the move is aimed at strengthening national security and countering what they described as hostile activities allegedly carried out by the IRGC, including threats to the UK and its allies.
Iran condemned the designation, describing it as politically motivated and warning that it could further strain diplomatic relations between Tehran and London.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the IRGC is a powerful branch of Iran’s armed forces with significant influence over the country’s military, political, and economic affairs. The latest development is expected to deepen tensions between Iran and Western governments amid ongoing disputes over regional security, sanctions, and Iran’s nuclear programme.
International observers say the UK’s decision could have broader diplomatic and security implications as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continue to evolve.
