The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) has urged journalists and media practitioners to actively combat misinformation and disinformation, emphasizing their critical role in promoting national unity and stability.
Speaking at a media forum in Abuja on Thursday, the CDS highlighted the increasing impact of fake news and misleading reports on national security and public trust. He encouraged journalists to ensure accuracy, verify sources, and uphold ethical standards in reporting.
“Journalists play a pivotal role in shaping public perception. Inaccurate reporting and the spread of false information can undermine peace, create confusion, and fuel division. We call on media professionals to act responsibly and use their platforms to foster unity,” he said.
The CDS also stressed the importance of collaboration between security agencies and the media to ensure timely and credible dissemination of information, particularly during emergencies and security operations.
Media experts attending the forum noted that proactive engagement with journalists can enhance transparency, reduce panic during crises, and strengthen citizens’ confidence in both the media and government institutions.
