Nigerians are facing another surge in the cost of living as cement prices have risen sharply to N10,500 per 50kg bag, up from around N9,800 in December 2025.
The increase, representing a 7.1% jump, has been recorded in Abuja, Nasarawa, Niger, and other parts of the country, despite Nigeria’s abundant local raw materials for cement production.
Former President of the Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria (REDAN), Alhaji Aliyu Oroji Wamakko, expressed deep concern over the hike, warning it threatens property development, raises rent costs, and could lead to job losses in the construction sector.
Wamakko recalled that major cement producers like Dangote and BUA had been invited by the Presidency last year after prices neared N10,000 and had pledged to reduce prices to around N7,000 per bag.
He questioned the government’s silence and the inactivity of the Price Control Board, linking the price surge to high demand from road projects, currency fluctuations, and dependence on imported production inputs.
The cement price spike is expected to further push up housing rents and construction costs amid Nigeria’s rising inflation, which hit 15.15% in December 2025.
