A conveyor belt operated by a ground handler has collided with an Air Peace aircraft at the Lagos airport, damaging the engine cover and disrupting the airline’s Lagos–Accra flight on Friday.
Passengers had already boarded the aircraft when the incident occurred, forcing them to be deboarded. The affected aircraft, a brand-new Embraer E2 jet, was scheduled to operate nine flight sectors and was fully booked until January 15, 2026.
Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), confirmed the incident and highlighted the financial and operational impact on the airline, which will now face refunds, compensation claims, and costly repairs.
Achimugu called for stricter regulations and heavier sanctions on service providers responsible for such incidents, emphasizing that airlines should not be held accountable for damages caused by ground handling inefficiency.
The NCAA is considering measures to improve transparency and passenger communication during such disruptions.
