Cross River Awaits Justice on Disputed Oil Wells as Legal Battle Intensifies

Cross River State remains locked in an anxious wait for justice over its long-running and fiercely contested dispute involving oil wells whose ownership and revenue allocation have been subjects of bitter legal and political battles with neighbouring states.

The dispute, which has significant financial implications for Cross River State’s revenue base and overall economic development, centres on the classification and attribution of oil wells that Cross River argues rightfully belong within its territorial boundaries — a position that, if upheld by the courts, could dramatically transform the state’s fiscal fortunes and alter the revenue sharing calculations of the Federation Account.

Legal proceedings over the contested oil wells have wound through Nigeria’s judicial system for years, with Cross River State consistently maintaining that it has been unjustly denied its rightful share of oil revenues derived from wells it considers to be within its legitimate geographical domain.

State government officials, community leaders, and civil society voices in Cross River have expressed growing frustration over the pace of judicial proceedings, urging the Supreme Court and relevant federal authorities to expedite the resolution of a dispute that has long deprived the state and its people of critical development resources.

“Cross River has waited long enough. Justice delayed in this matter is development denied — denied to our schools, our hospitals, our roads, and our people,” a prominent Cross River stakeholder declared.

Revenue allocation experts note that a favourable ruling for Cross River could significantly boost the state’s monthly Federation Account allocation, providing the government with much-needed funds to accelerate infrastructure development, strengthen public services, and improve the living standards of its citizens.
The Federal Government and the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) are being urged to engage all parties constructively and support a fair, transparent, and expeditious resolution of the oil wells dispute in the overall interest of justice, equity, and national cohesion.
