Death Sentence for Kano Mass Murder

Kano State High Court sitting at Bompai has sentenced two men to death by hanging for the murder of a 35-year-old housewife, Fatima Abubakar, and her six children.

CDA News Nigeria gathered that the court, presided over by Justice Nasiru Saminu, delivered the judgment on Friday, November 6, 2026. The convicts, identified as Umar Auwalu (alias Breaker) and Yakubu Dayyabu, were found guilty of the January 17, 2026, killings in Dorayi Chiranci, Kano.

The victims included Fatima and her children: Maimuna (17), Aisha (16), Bashir (13), Abubakar (10), Faruk (7), and one-and-a-half-year-old Abdussalam. The two convicts were each handed seven death sentences—one for each victim—for culpable homicide punishable with death under Section 221 of the Penal Code. They also received life imprisonment with hard labour for conspiracy and armed robbery.

During the trial, the court heard that the attackers gained access after Fatima opened the door for Auwalu, whom she knew as her nephew. The assailants locked the house and attacked the family with a cutlass, a club, and a sewing machine. Neighbours who forced their way in found the attackers had escaped.

However, the third defendant, Isyaku Yakubu (alias Chebe), was discharged and acquitted. Auwalu had admitted partial responsibility and alleged a herbalist supplied him with incense to carry out such attacks.
