The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kano State has fired a bold and unambiguous warning shot at former Governor and NNPP leader Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, with the state chapter’s Chairman declaring in no uncertain terms that the party will not surrender its hard-built organisational structure to Kwankwaso or any external political force seeking to hijack the platform.
The Kano NDC Chairman’s remarks come amid intensifying speculation and reports that Kwankwaso and his political movement are in advanced talks to defect into the NDC, raising fears among existing party stakeholders that the incoming wave of high-profile defectors could overwhelm and effectively take over the party’s internal machinery.
Speaking with visible resolve, the Chairman made clear that the NDC in Kano was built from the ground up by committed and loyal party members who sacrificed time, resources, and energy to establish a viable political platform — and that no political heavyweight, regardless of their profile or followership, would be allowed to walk in and displace the original architects of the party’s structure.
His remarks echo growing tensions within the NDC nationally, as original party members across several states express alarm over the prospect of their platforms being absorbed and repurposed by defecting political figures with large but potentially destabilising followings.
The warning is seen as a direct message to Kwankwaso’s camp that any defection into the NDC must come on terms that respect and preserve the existing leadership structure — not replace it.
Political analysts say the stand-off highlights a fundamental challenge facing Nigerian opposition parties as they attempt to consolidate ahead of 2027 — balancing the need for big names and large followings against the risk of internal takeover and marginalisation of founding members.
As negotiations continue, the NDC’s national leadership now faces the delicate task of managing the expectations of both incoming political heavyweights and the grassroots faithful who built the party from scratch.
