The simmering tensions within Nigeria’s opposition political space have exploded into the open as Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party’s 2023 Vice Presidential candidate, has launched a stunning and deeply personal attack on former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential flagbearer, Peter Obi — telling him bluntly to stay in his house if he lacks the stomach and courage to fight for the political future of Nigeria.
Datti’s remarks, delivered with unmistakable sharpness and frustration, represent one of the most direct and damaging public attacks ever launched by one opposition figure against another in recent Nigerian political history — and signal a dramatic and potentially irreparable breakdown in the relationship between two men who ran together on the same presidential ticket just two years ago.
The former vice presidential candidate appeared to be reacting to what he described as Obi’s insufficient commitment, indecisiveness, or perceived reluctance to take bold and decisive political action in the face of Nigeria’s deepening governance crisis and the urgent need for a credible and fearless opposition movement.
“Stay in your house if you can’t fight,” Datti said, in words that have since reverberated across Nigerian social media and political circles, sparking heated debate about the future of the Labour Party, the state of the opposition, and the personal and ideological differences now clearly dividing its leading figures.
The outburst raises serious and immediate questions about the internal cohesion of the Labour Party ahead of the 2027 general elections, at a time when opposition unity is widely seen as the single most critical factor in mounting a credible challenge against President Bola Tinubu and the ruling APC.
Political analysts warn that if Datti and Obi fail to resolve their differences quickly and publicly, the fallout could fatally fracture what remains of the Obidient movement and hand the APC a significant political advantage heading into 2027.
Supporters of Peter Obi have since fired back at Datti, accusing him of grandstanding and undermining the very opposition cause he claims to champion, while Datti’s own camp insists the remarks were a necessary and honest wake-up call.
