ABIA – Chinenye Anyim, the first All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Abia State and former party National Vice Chairman for the Southeast, has expressed confidence that the APC can win the state in the 2027 election despite its poor performance in 2023.
In an interview on Tuesday, Anyim dismissed claims that the Abia APC is divided, stating there is only one party structure under Chairman Dr. Kingsley Ononogbu.
Reflecting on the 2023 loss, he acknowledged the impact of the “Obi wave” and noted that Governor Alex Otti—then a Labour Party candidate—had previously been a strong APC member whose departure affected the party’s fortunes.
Anyim argued that the APC’s chances in 2027 are stronger due to an influx of political heavyweights into the party. He downplayed the incumbency advantage of Governor Otti, recalling that incumbents have lost re-election before.
On speculations about Otti returning to the APC, Anyim welcomed the idea, saying, “If he wants to return, he is welcome. Some APC leaders have even been urging him to return to his roots.”
He praised Otti’s performance, citing increased federal allocations to states as a factor enabling better governance.
Anyim also affirmed his support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027 and urged Igbos to register and vote to influence governance.
On insecurity and the Nnamdi Kanu case, he backed a political solution and called for public support for government efforts.
