ASABA, NIGERIA – The Delta State Police Command has halted a seven-day cultural festival following reports of alleged sexual assault linked to the event, sparking outrage among residents and human rights groups.
Commissioner of Police Abaniwonda Olufemi ordered the immediate suspension of the festival, which was underway in a community within the state, after receiving multiple complaints from victims and concerned citizens. Preliminary investigations revealed that female participants were reportedly subjected to harassment and assault under the guise of traditional practices.
“We will not tolerate any culture that promotes violence against women. The organizers have been directed to halt proceedings indefinitely,” the police spokesperson stated.
Authorities have launched a manhunt for suspects identified by victims, with assurances that all perpetrators will face prosecution. The command also warned community leaders against shielding culprits under the cover of tradition.
Women’s rights activists have commended the police action, calling for broader sensitization programs to dismantle harmful cultural practices across the state. The state government has yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
