A former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Yekini Nabena, has cautioned the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) against handing over party structures to incumbent governors ahead of the forthcoming ward, local government, and state congresses.
In a statement issued in Abuja, Nabena warned that ceding control of the party’s grassroots machinery to governors would trigger internal crisis, breed resentment, and further shrink the APC’s dwindling support base ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“The 2027 general elections are about the masses against the few people in the corridors of power, hence the masses must be carried along,” Nabena said.
He expressed concern that the NWC, led by Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, was reportedly preparing to hand over nomination forms to governors, who would then determine party leadership by selection rather than election.
“This will not end well. In fact, it will be the beginning of an internal crisis which may lead to implosion,” he warned.
Nabena also took a swipe at the composition of the current NWC, noting that the National Chairman and more than half of its members were appointed, not elected, and therefore lacked the requisite experience of contesting and winning internal elections.
He urged the NWC to ensure transparency by making nomination forms available to all aspirants at every level to avoid friction and litigation across states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The APC chieftain further called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and forestall what he described as a looming implosion.
“APC used to have about 40 million registered members but now we are struggling to get 10 million in the ongoing electronic registration. This calls for caution,” Nabena added.
