A gunman killed nine people and wounded 27 others in a mass shooting at a secondary school and a residence in Tumbler Ridge, a remote mountain town in western Canada, before taking their own life, police said Tuesday.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) confirmed that six victims were found dead at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, with a seventh person dying en route to hospital. Two additional bodies were discovered at a connected residence. The suspected shooter was found deceased at the school from what appeared to be a self-inflicted injury.
Authorities declined to release details on the suspect’s identity, though Canadian media reported the shooter was female. Twenty-five of the wounded sustained non-life-threatening injuries, while two remain in serious condition.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was “devastated” by the “horrific acts of violence” and announced he was suspending plans to attend the Munich Security Conference.
The municipality of Tumbler Ridge, a quiet community of approximately 2,400 residents located 1,100 kilometres north of Vancouver, said: “There are no words sufficient for the heartbreak our community is experiencing tonight.”
Student Darian Quist described being in lockdown for over two hours before police evacuated the school. His mother, Shelley Quist, told CBC her son “is not going to be out of my sight for a while now.”
British Columbia Premier David Eby called the violence “unimaginable.” The RCMP continues to search other properties for possible additional crime scenes.
Mass shootings remain rare in Canada, though 11 people were killed in Vancouver in April 2025 during a vehicle attack targeting a Filipino cultural festival.
