ABUJA, NIGERIA – Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have evicted former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), and his family from his Abuja residence, following a court-ordered forfeiture of the property.
The eviction, which took place on Wednesday, saw heavily armed EFCC officials seal off the Asokoro home and remove the occupants. The property was marked for forfeiture earlier this week as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged financial improprieties during Malami’s tenure as chief law officer from 2015 to 2023.
A court order obtained by the anti-graft agency authorized the seizure of the property, which the EFCC claims was acquired through questionable means. Malami has consistently denied any wrongdoing, describing the EFCC’s actions as politically motivated.
“This is a travesty of justice. We will challenge this in court,” a source close to the former minister said.
The EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the eviction, stating that the commission was carrying out its lawful mandate to recover assets suspected to be proceeds of corruption.
Malami’s legal team is expected to file an appeal against the forfeiture order. The former AGF now joins a growing list of ex-public officials facing asset recovery actions by the commission.
