State Police: Federal Force Can Intervene Over Electoral Intimidation — Senate

The Senate has clarified that the Federal Government can deploy federal security forces to intervene in cases of electoral intimidation, even with the establishment of state police.

CDA News Nigeria gathered that this clarification was made by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Constitution Review during a recent briefing in Abuja. The Senate emphasized that while state police will handle local security, the constitutional role of the Nigeria Police Force and the military in maintaining national security and ensuring free, fair, and credible elections remains intact.

According to the lawmakers, federal forces can intervene if state police are compromised or used for political intimidation by state governors. The Senate noted that the ongoing constitutional amendment process aims to establish clear boundaries to prevent the abuse of power, ensuring that state police are not weaponized against political opponents.

CDA News Nigeria reports that the move is part of broader efforts to decentralize policing to address the country’s security challenges while safeguarding democratic processes ahead of the 2027 general elections. The Senate assured that strict legal frameworks will be put in place to regulate the operations of state police across the federation.
