INEC Urges Politicians To Conduct Lawful Primaries Ahead Of Elections

ABUJA – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a strong appeal to political parties and politicians to ensure strict adherence to electoral laws and guidelines when conducting primary elections.

The commission’s chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, made the call during a meeting with political stakeholders in Abuja, emphasizing the importance of transparent and lawful primaries in strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process.

Professor Yakubu stressed that the conduct of credible primaries is fundamental to the overall integrity of elections, noting that flawed nomination processes often lead to post-election litigation and political instability.

“The commission urges all political parties to conduct their primaries in full compliance with the Electoral Act and their respective constitutions. The era of impunity in party primaries must end,” the INEC chairman stated.

The commission warned that it would not recognize candidates emerging from primaries that violate established electoral laws and party guidelines, emphasizing that proper internal democracy within parties is crucial for national political stability.

INEC also reminded parties of scheduled timelines for submission of candidate lists and urged them to avoid last-minute preparations that could compromise the quality of their primaries.

The appeal comes amid increasing political activities across parties as the country prepares for upcoming elections.
