Insecurity: Schools Build Escape Routes as Abduction Crisis Deepens

Schools across Nigeria are constructing emergency escape routes, installing surveillance cameras, and reinforcing perimeter fencing as part of heightened security measures to protect students from abductions and attacks by terrorists and bandits .

CDA News Nigeria reports that the development follows recent mass abductions, including the May 2026 attack in Oyo State where gunmen abducted over 46 pupils and teachers from three schools. Schools and places of worship are considered prime targets for criminal groups seeking hostages for ransom .

CDA News Nigeria gathered that the Nigeria Union of Teachers is collaborating with the Federal Government and security agencies to strengthen protection, particularly in rural communities. The First Vice-President of NUT, Bashir Oyewo, confirmed that discussions are ongoing to reorganise the Safe School Project .

The Parents-Teachers Association has also stepped in, engaging additional security personnel for many schools lacking adequate protection. PTA National President Alhaji Hussein Danjuma stated: “Most of the schools we have in Nigeria lack security personnel. In each PTA, we task ourselves by engaging the services of security personnel” .

A school principal in Ikorodu, Lagos State, Bolaji Adekoya, told Sunday PUNCH: “We have erected a gate and created an escape path that was not there before. We should be prepared for anything because of what is happening across the country” . Private schools in Osun State are also mounting CCTV cameras and increasing fence heights, according to former NAPPS chairman Alhaja Kojusola Adepoju .
