The Rivers State House of Assembly has refused to engage with the peace and reconciliation committee set up by the Pan Niger Delta Elders Forum (PANDEF), signaling its determination to proceed with the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The seven-member PANDEF delegation, led by former Attorney-General of the Federation Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), was in Port Harcourt over the weekend but could not secure a meeting with Speaker Martins Amaewhule, despite repeated attempts.
Sources revealed that the lawmakers did not respond to calls from the committee or mediation efforts by allies of the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
The Assembly has adjourned until January 27, 2026, amid expectations that impeachment proceedings will advance. However, legal hurdles remain, as the state High Court has barred the Chief Judge from setting up an investigative panel against the governor.
The political standoff continues despite PANDEF’s earlier meetings with Wike, Governor Fubara, and various elders’ groups in the state.
