Sokoto Appeal Court Affirms Death Penalty for Woman Convicted of Killing Ex-Husband

SOKOTO – The Court of Appeal, Sokoto Division, has dismissed the appeal of Farida Abubakar and upheld her death sentence for the murder of her ex-husband, Chief Magistrate Attahiru Muhammad-Ibrahim.

The three-judge panel, led by Hon. Justice Tunde Oyebamiji Awotoye, ruled on Monday that the appeal lacked merit, affirming the June 2024 judgment of the Kebbi State High Court.

“The appeal lacks merit. The court affirms the conviction and sentence of the appellant as delivered by the High Court of Kebbi State on 03/06/2024,” the court declared.

Farida Abubakar was convicted of culpable homicide punishable by death and causing grievous hurt. The prosecution presented evidence from 12 witnesses, including her blood-stained hijab and extra-judicial statements, which proved she stabbed the victim in the abdomen, neck, and left arm.

The appellate court found the evidence “cogent and uncontroverted,” satisfying the burden of proof beyond reasonable doubt.

Under Section 191(b) of the Kebbi State Penal Code, the death sentence by hanging was upheld, along with a seven-year imprisonment for grievous hurt under Section 224(1).

It was reported that the appellant, dissatisfied with the ruling, has proceeded to the Supreme Court to challenge the appellate court’s decision.
