FMC Umuahia Defended Amid Allegations of Blackmail

UMUAHIA, NIGERIA — A public affairs commentator, Ugochukwu Nwankwo, has defended the Federal Medical Centre Umuahia against what he described as “misleading and malicious claims” allegedly spread by an anonymous social media critic known as “People of Abia.”

In a strongly worded opinion, Nwankwo accused the commentator of engaging in blackmail and misinformation, particularly regarding recent claims about the operations and standards of the medical facility.

He argued that such narratives risk discouraging patients from accessing care at the hospital.

Nwankwo highlighted the achievements of the hospital under the leadership of Azubuike Onyebuchi, noting improvements in infrastructure, healthcare delivery, and administrative efficiency.

He pointed to developments such as a modern Accident and Emergency unit and successful kidney transplant procedures as evidence of progress.

He further maintained that challenges such as staff workload and emergency care limitations are not unique to FMC Umuahia but are common across major public hospitals in Nigeria.

The commentator also dismissed claims attributed to unnamed surveys and reports, describing them as either fabricated or misrepresented. He urged the public to disregard unverified online content and rely on firsthand experiences and credible sources.

While acknowledging the need for continuous improvement, Nwankwo called for constructive engagement rather than what he termed “destructive criticism,” emphasizing the importance of supporting healthcare institutions in the state.
