El-Rufai Suffered Overnight Nosebleed in Custody, Aide Raises Alarm

Fresh concerns have emerged over the health and welfare of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, after his media aide disclosed that he suffered an overnight nosebleed while in the custody of anti-graft agencies .

Muyiwa Adekeye, in a statement issued late Monday, revealed that El-Rufai experienced the health episode during his detention, now entering its second week. The former governor voluntarily reported to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on February 16 following an invitation. He was later transferred to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on February 18 .

Adekeye also alleged that one of El-Rufai’s wives was prevented from personally delivering food to him on the evening of February 17, being instructed to hand it over to commission personnel instead . The aide expressed worry over restricted family access and the absence of any remand order justifying detention beyond the constitutionally permitted 48 hours without charge .

Both anti-corruption bodies are investigating El-Rufai over alleged financial misconduct during his eight-year tenure as governor (2015–2023). In 2024, the Kaduna State House of Assembly accused him of diverting N423 billion in public funds and money laundering .

El-Rufai’s legal team has applied for bail from the ICPC but is yet to receive a response. A fundamental rights enforcement suit against the Federal Government, EFCC, ICPC, and DSS is scheduled for hearing on February 25 at the Federal Capital Territory High Court .

The former governor also faces arraignment this week over allegations of intercepting a telephone conversation involving National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu .
