Electoral Act Delay Threatens 2027 Elections – Atiku, CSOs Warn Senate

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and a coalition of Civil Society Organizations have raised alarm over the Nigerian Senate’s delay in amending the Electoral Act 2022, warning that the inaction poses a significant threat to the credibility and timing of the 2027 general elections.

In a joint statement, the group emphasized that urgent amendments are required to address critical loopholes and legal uncertainties observed in recent elections. They argue that further postponement of necessary electoral reforms compromises the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) preparation timeline and undermines public confidence in the process.

The call highlights specific issues, including the need for clearer regulations on technology use, result transmission, and political party primaries. Stakeholders insist that the Senate must expedite the amendment process to allow sufficient time for testing, stakeholder training, and implementation before the next election cycle.

This warning adds to growing pressure on the National Assembly to prioritize electoral reforms as a fundamental democratic imperative.
