ENUGU, NIGERIA – In a move that has sent shockwaves through the political landscape of Enugu State and the wider South-East region, Governor Peter Mbah has formally resigned his membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The Governor’s resignation was confirmed in a letter addressed to the Chairman of his Ward in the Mburubu Ward II, Nkanu East Local Government Area, and submitted on Tuesday.
The brief but decisive letter, seen by CDA News, cited “personal reasons” for his departure from the party which has been the dominant political force in Enugu State for over two decades. Governor Mbah expressed gratitude to the party for the opportunity given to him to contest and serve under its banner.
After extensive consultations and due consideration, I have decided to resign my membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” the letter read in part. “I thank the party and its leadership for the support over the years.”
Governor Mbah, who was elected as Governor in the 2023 gubernatorial election under the PDP platform, has not yet indicated his next political move. His resignation has ignited a frenzy of speculation among political analysts and stakeholders.
Several sources suggest the Governor may be preparing to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), the ruling party at the federal level, a move that would significantly alter the political calculus in the traditionally PDP-aligned state.
