ABUJA – Former presidential candidate Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies has expressed profound sorrow over the abduction of 25 schoolgirls in Kebbi State, calling for immediate government action to rescue the students and secure educational institutions across Nigeria.
The women’s rights advocate described Tuesday’s attack on Government Girls’ Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga as “a heinous act that strikes at the heart of our nation’s hope,” emphasizing that the kidnapping represents both a security failure and an assault on fundamental human rights.
Adesanya-Davies urged federal and state authorities to “spare no effort” in rescuing the abducted girls and implementing robust security measures for schools in vulnerable regions, particularly in northwest Nigeria where such attacks have become increasingly frequent.
The former presidential candidate, known for championing education and women’s empowerment, stressed that “no child should live in fear of violence for seeking education,” noting that the incident undermines both individual futures and national development.
She extended condolences to families of the vice-principal and security guard killed during the attack while pledging to collaborate with civil society organizations to provide trauma support and ensure the girls’ safe return to education.
Adesanya-Davies called for a comprehensive national strategy to address root causes of insecurity, including improved security infrastructure in rural areas and enhanced education funding.
