ILORIN – Armed bandits have killed two rice farmers and abducted four others in Bokungi Village, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, marking the second major security incident in the region within 24 hours.
The attack occurred on Wednesday evening during peak harvest hours, with the assailants targeting farmers as they worked in their fields. According to community sources, the two victims were killed while attempting to resist abduction.
This latest incident follows Tuesday’s attack on a church in Eruku, Ekiti Local Government Area, highlighting escalating security challenges in Kwara’s rural communities.
Local residents reported that the bandits operated for several minutes before fleeing the area, with three farmers managing to escape—though one sustained injuries during the confrontation.
Community leaders note that rising insecurity has forced many farmers to abandon their settlements, particularly during harvest season when agricultural workers are most vulnerable to attacks.
Security agencies have been alerted to the incident, though official confirmation from the Kwara State Police Command remains pending at the time of reporting.
