ABUJA – Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has stated that the security challenges facing his state should not be classified as genocide, clarifying the nature of the violence during a human rights forum in Abuja.
Speaking at a National Human Rights Commission event focused on protecting displaced persons, Governor Alia provided this important distinction while discussing the plight of Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, in Benue State.
The governor’s comments come amid ongoing national and international discussions about the severity of violence in Nigeria’s Middle Belt region and its classification.
Governor Alia participated in the consultative forum alongside human rights officials and other stakeholders addressing the rights and protection of those forcibly displaced by conflict.
