ABUJA — Senator Ireti Kingibe, the lawmaker representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has officially defected from the Labour Party (LP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), in a move expected to reshape politics in the nation’s capital ahead of council polls and the 2027 general elections.
The defection was announced at a high-profile ceremony at Merit House, Abuja, attended by top ADC officials and supporters.
Why She Moved:
Kingibe stated that she joined ADC because it is “a giant in the making” with a strong, growing presence in the FCT and a people-centered vision for governance.
“I have chosen to join the African Democratic Congress because it is a giant in the making. In the FCT, ADC is not just present; it is strong, vibrant and growing from strength to strength,” she said.
ADC’s Reaction:
ADC Youth Leader Comrade Balarabe Rufai hailed her entry as a “big fish” catch that consolidates the party’s coalition-building efforts. The party’s Deputy Organising Secretary, Alhaji Atiku Saleh, presented Kingibe with her membership card, describing the move as a turning point.
“By God’s grace, come 2027, we will emerge victorious,” Saleh added.
Political Implications:
Analysts view Kingibe’s defection as a significant blow to the Labour Party’s influence in the FCT and a sign of ongoing realignment in Nigeria’s political landscape, where performance and grassroots appeal are increasingly shaping allegiances.
