FG Eyes Retaliatory Measures Against South African Companies Over Migrant Attacks

The Federal Government has hinted at possible retaliatory measures against South African companies operating in Nigeria, including telecoms giant MTN, as outrage mounts over xenophobic attacks on Nigerians.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, disclosed this on Thursday while addressing the worsening anti-migrant violence and evacuation of Nigerian citizens from South Africa.

She noted that over 120 South African firms, including MultiChoice, Stanbic and Protea, operate freely in Nigeria without harassment, whereas Nigerians in South Africa face attacks, property seizures and forced displacement.

“Nobody is asking them to provide proof of identity. Nobody is taking over their shops or businesses. But this is happening to Nigerians in South Africa,” she said.

The minister stressed that any action would follow constitutional provisions and legislative due process, with the National Assembly playing a key role. She revealed that South Africa had discarded an October 2025 memorandum of understanding on early warning mechanisms meant to protect both nations’ citizens during conflicts.

The development follows Senator Adams Oshiomhole’s May call for revocation of MTN and MultiChoice licences over the attacks.
