FG Panel Uncovers Prison Feeding Scam, Recommends N3,000 Daily Inmate Allowance

A Federal Government investigative panel has uncovered alleged irregularities in the feeding system within Nigeria’s correctional centres, raising concerns over the welfare of inmates across the country.

The panel reportedly discovered discrepancies in the management of funds meant for inmates’ feeding, prompting calls for urgent reforms to improve transparency and accountability in the correctional system.

As part of its recommendations, the committee proposed a N3,000 daily feeding allowance per inmate, arguing that the current allocation is inadequate to provide nutritious meals amid rising food costs.

The recommendation is expected to enhance the welfare of inmates while addressing longstanding complaints about poor feeding conditions in custodial facilities nationwide.

The panel also urged the relevant authorities to strengthen oversight mechanisms, ensure prudent management of correctional resources, and implement reforms aimed at restoring public confidence in the prison system.

If adopted, the proposed allowance could mark a significant shift in Nigeria’s correctional administration and improve living conditions for thousands of inmates.
