The Federal Government has vowed to crack down on inflated public contracts and procurement violations across all government-owned agencies, corporations, and commissions.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, issued the warning in a circular addressed to ministers, permanent secretaries, and heads of parastatals.
Akume expressed concern that several government-owned enterprises continue to award contracts in violation of the Public Procurement Act, 2007. He noted that this practice has resulted in contract sums exceeding established pricing benchmarks, restricted competition through exclusive arrangements, and undermined regulatory oversight.
The SGF directed all government-owned institutions utilizing public funds to ensure their procurement activities comply strictly with the law. He warned that any accounting officer who continues to award contracts without recourse to the Act will face strict sanctions.
Furthermore, the heads of these institutions were instructed to liaise with the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) for guidance. This directive reinforces the government’s push for transparency, following previous BPP reforms that reportedly saved the government N1.4 trillion in 18 months through price intelligence and benchmarking.
