ABUJA, NIGERIA – The Federal Government has issued a stern warning to correctional service officers, vowing to deal decisively with any personnel found guilty of violating inmates’ rights across the country.
The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration during a visit to the Nigerian Correctional Service headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday. He condemned reports of rights abuses, including torture, unlawful detention, and inhumane treatment of inmates, describing such acts as unacceptable and contrary to the government’s reform agenda.
“Any officer found culpable of violating inmates’ rights will face the full wrath of the law. We will not tolerate such misconduct,” Tunji-Ojo stated.
The Minister announced plans to strengthen oversight mechanisms, including the installation of surveillance systems in custodial centers and the establishment of a complaints response unit for inmates and their families.
The Controller-General of Corrections, Haliru Nababa, assured that erring officers would be identified and prosecuted, reaffirming the service’s commitment to upholding international standards.
Human rights groups have welcomed the government’s stance, calling for swift implementation of accountability measures to protect the dignity of inmates in Nigeria’s custodial facilities.
