FIFA Ends Super Eagles’ 2026 World Cup Dream, Confirms DR Congo for Play-off

FIFA has officially ended the Super Eagles’ hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after confirming the final line-up for the inter-confederation play-off tournament, with DR Congo named as Africa’s representative .

In an accreditation notice circulated to journalists on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, FIFA detailed the tournament format and listed the six participating nations: Bolivia, DR Congo, Iraq, Jamaica, New Caledonia, and Suriname . DR Congo’s inclusion leaves no room for Nigeria, whose football federation had challenged the result of their defeat in the CAF play-offs in November 2025 .

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) lodged a formal protest, alleging that DR Congo fielded ineligible players during the decisive tie, which ended 1-1 and went to penalties, where Nigeria lost . The appeal sought to overturn the result and secure the Super Eagles’ place in the inter-continental play-offs .

The NFF’s protest was hinged on the alleged illegal switch of nationality by some DR Congo players. According to FIFA statutes, a player may request to change the association they are eligible to represent only once. The NFF contended that under Congolese law, which forbids dual citizenship, some players should not have been eligible .

The play-off tournament will run from March 26 to 31, 2026, in Guadalajara and Monterrey, Mexico . The four lowest-ranked teams (Bolivia, Jamaica, New Caledonia, Suriname) will contest semi-finals, while the two highest-ranked teams (DR Congo and Iraq) advance directly to the finals . DR Congo will face the winner of Jamaica vs. New Caledonia for a World Cup berth.

For Nigeria, FIFA’s confirmation ends months of uncertainty and dashed hopes, leaving the Super Eagles to miss a second consecutive World Cup .
