Commuters are stranded and vehicles have been submerged, while residents blame blocked drainage systems for the crisis.
Heavy rainfall on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, has caused severe flooding in Lugbe, a suburb of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, leaving major roads, including the busy Airport Road, completely submerged and impassable .
Commuters heading to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport and other destinations have been stranded as vehicles are trapped in the floodwaters, leading to significant traffic gridlock. In some areas, vehicles and motorcycles have been partially submerged, forcing many residents to abandon their cars and trek to safety .
The downpour, which lasted for hours, also flooded homes and businesses, with water levels rising to dangerous heights, causing panic among residents. Preliminary reports indicate that the floodwaters originated from two major rivers—the Rima and Goruba—that overflowed their banks following the heavy rainfall .
Residents have pointed to blocked drainage systems and years of inadequate urban planning as contributing factors to the recurrent flooding in the area. Emergency services are currently working to assist stranded residents, but access to affected areas remains challenging.
