Fresh Turmoil in PDP as Wike Camp Rolls Out Primaries Plan, Rival Faction Kicks

A fresh wave of crisis has hit the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the faction backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, adopted a timetable for primary elections ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The decision was announced on Monday, April 20, 2026, during the faction’s 108th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held at the party’s national headquarters, Wadata Plaza, Abuja. The meeting marked the first NEC gathering since the police unsealed the secretariat and handed it over to the Wike-backed leadership. At the meeting, the faction declared that the “era of uncertainty is over” and called for strict adherence to INEC guidelines. The National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, stressed the need for discipline and internal reforms while assuring members of transparent primaries. Wike, in his remarks, urged the leadership to set up a strong committee to reach out to defectors and aggrieved members, insisting that he remains loyal to the PDP.

However, the rival camp led by Tanimu Turaki (SAN) has dismissed the meeting, describing it as illegitimate and an APC-led infiltration. The Turaki faction, which enjoys the support of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, warned party members against recognising any decision taken at the gathering. Both factions remain locked in multiple court cases over the control of the party structure. The Turaki-led camp has also written to INEC, seeking the de-recognition of the Wike-backed leadership, further deepening the crisis.
