Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has officially declared Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, as his preferred successor ahead of the 7 general election.
The announcement, made during a stakeholders’ meeting in Abeokuta on Monday, effectively ends months of intense speculation over who will inherit the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket in the state. Governor Abiodun described Sen Yayi as a tested leader with the capacity to consolidate on the achievements of his administration.
“I have no doubt that Sen Yayi possesses the experience, vision, and grassroots connection to lead Ogun State to greater heights,” Abiodun told party faithful. “He is my chosen successor.”
Sen Yayi, who currently represents Ogun West in the National Assembly, has served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations. His political influence spans decades, having previously served in the Lagos State House of Assembly and the House of Representatives.
Reactions to the endorsement have been mixed. While many APC chieftains hailed the decision as a step toward continuity, some aspirants and their supporters expressed disappointment, alleging that the process was not inclusive.
Sen Yayi, in his response, thanked the governor for his confidence and pledged to run an issue-based campaign focused on infrastructure, education, and youth empowerment.
Political analysts say the declaration sets the stage for a high-stakes contest in 2027, with opposition parties already scrambling to build coalitions.
