The busy Iwo Road interchange in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, was paralysed on Monday as protesters stormed the area demanding government action over the unresolved abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in the state.
Protesters took over the Iwo Road interchange at about 10 a.m., bringing traffic around the busy transport corridor to a halt. The demonstration was led by the Take It Back Movement, with protesters calling for improved security and the immediate release of abducted schoolchildren and teachers kidnapped in Orire Local Government Area of the state.
The National Coordinator of the movement, Juwon Sanyaolu, described the protest as a continuation of actions the organisation had embarked upon since the abduction of the children and teachers in Orire LGA in May.
Sanyaolu criticised political leaders for focusing on the 2027 elections while insecurity continues to threaten lives across the country. He warned that the demonstrations would persist until the government acted decisively.
“We will not wait until 2027. By then, we do not know how many people will still be alive. Both the state and federal governments must act or continue to face mass protests,” he said.
The protest caused heavy gridlock around Iwo Road, leaving commuters stranded for several hours. Demonstrators carried placards bearing the message #EndKidnapping as they blocked vehicular movement along the major route.
The Oyo State and Federal Government are yet to formally respond to Monday’s action.
