Gunfire Rocks Osun as Police Begin Probe, Beef Up Security for August Election

The Osun State Police Command has commenced investigations into shooting incidents that occurred on Tuesday in parts of the state, including Ile-Ife, Osogbo, and Owode-Ede .

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed that some passers-by were injured by stray bullets during the sporadic shootings . Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, has directed the Violent Crime Response Unit, Operations, and Intelligence Departments to launch a thorough investigation .

“An intensive, intelligence-led operation is ongoing to apprehend the perpetrators and their sponsors, regardless of their societal or political status,” Ojelabi said . He added that normalcy has been restored and security reinforced in affected locations .

The incidents have sparked political tensions ahead of the August governorship election. Governor Ademola Adeleke accused APC of orchestrating the attacks, while the APC alleged that thugs loyal to the Accord Party were responsible . This follows last week’s shooting of the Accord Party chairman in Osogbo, who is now in stable condition .

Police have urged residents to remain calm and provide useful information to aid the investigation .
